Training tips and Program

Tip 1 Make sure your bike is in sound mechanical condition

It doesn’t matter what sort of bike it is as long as it is road worthy. Bring it down to the GoKart track on Saturday 30 April for a quick checkover or take it to Hannan’s Cycles, 44 Boulder Road for an overhaul. Having the correct set up can increase the pleasure or pain of the ride incredibly. Check your seat height, handle bars, brake pads and tyres. Equip your bike with a puncture repair kit and know how to use it.

Tip 2 Start training now

The main way to enjoy the ride is to prepare your body for it. Either develop your own training program or join ours, free, below. Build yourself up to the distance you will have to cover on the day.

Tip 3 Increase your effort

Good steady riding is great for starting out, but then introduce some bursts of speed to increase your heart rate. Aim for three bursts of at least 30 sec per ride. Increase the length of the burst as you get fitter.

Tip 4 Familiarise yourself with the start and finish

Not difficult – the start will go from Monty’s restaurant, up Hannans Street and out onto the Goldfields Highway. The finish is opposite the pub on Menzies High street.

Tip 5 Familiarise yourself with the route

Join the ride on 22 May for familiarisation of the first stage although we will be riding it in reverse. If you have time, drive the whole route noting where the changeover points will be.

Tip 6 Fuel up

Make sure your diet includes a good number of carbohydrates and cut down on the fat. On the day, make sure your bike can carry two water bottles. Each of these should have your favourite energy drink or you can take water and a carbo gel packet.

Tip 7 Event day breakfast

Keep the fluid levels up in the morning. Have a high carbs breakfast well before the race starts.

Tip 8 During the event

Do try to drink frequently. Top up the energy levels every 45 with something like a banana or carbo gel and wash them down with more water.

Also grin and encourage all other folk on the ride. It always feels good to have a partner in effort.

Tip 9 After the event

Do hydrate with a non-alcoholic drink before celebrating at the bar and have a nice meal including some protein afterwards.

Tip 10 Have fun

Enjoy your achievement, but remember, it may be hard work to get it. The more work you put in, the greater the gain. Don’t be afraid to take things at your own pace – this is your Challenge!

Saturday 30 April 7.30 – 9.00 am Bike skills – GoKart track – bike fitting, gears, signals, riding skills

Weekday – sneak a ½ hr ride in during the week

Saturday 7 May – 7.30 – 9.00 am Speed skills – GoKart track – corners, sprints and tempo riding

Weekday – sneak a ½ hr ride in during the week

Saturday 14 May 7.30 - 9.00 am – meet at Monty’s Endurance and road skills – Bulong road – group skills, drafting, hills and endurance

Weekday – sneak a 45 min ride in during the week

Sunday 22 May Join the bike club for a 35km ride from Mt Pleasant into Kalgoorlie – this is the first stage of the race (in reverse).

Weekday – sneak a 45 min ride in during the week

Saturday 28 May or Sunday 29 May – 1.5 hr ride with your team – put some sprints in to raise the heart rate – you fix your own time

Weekday – sneak a ½ hr ride in during the week

4 June – Menzies Ride Meet at the Graduates Hall McDonald Street 8.30am for race briefing and registration
